Natural Paradise of El Espino Beach
Translated by: Alexandra Monge
La Playa El Espino is located in the department of Usulutan in the town of Jucuarán. According to the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) the beach is located 40 minutes from the town´s capital and 2 hours and 15 minutes from the nation’s capital city, San Salvador.
It is part of Jiquilisco Bay, where Puerto Parada, Puerto El Triunfo and several estuaries and beaches are located. With more than 11 kilometers of black volcanic sand coastline, vacationers can enjoy a unique landscape where they can appreciate the entrance to the Chepona to the west and the Bocanita to the east.
This exclusive beach is characterized by its warm water and gentle waves. At low tide, there are small pools of water where visitors can enjoy and relax.
MITUR’s research documented that during the time of El Salvador’s civil war, the small town of Jucuarán was a highly dangerous area, which caused many properties to be destroyed. Tourism was absent for a long time. With the end of the war, new people came to settle, and have remained residents up to this day, who fish as their main economic resource in order to sustain their families.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), in the last 30 years the sea level has increased by 50 meters on this beach, which has caused several households and vegetation to be washed away by the ocean. The issue worsened with the E12 storm in 2011. Studies made by the MARN indicate that the principal threats for the coast are violent waves and wind erosion.
All these natural phenomenon have caused the appearance of rocky headlands that rise near the shore; these are also known as cliffs with heights that reach more than 25 meters above sea level. Consequently, these headlands are responsible for the creation of rocky terraces that bow to the depths of the sea. These natural environments are ideal for commercially important species such as oysters and help preserve the diversity of many marine species.
Due to its geographical location, El Espino beach brings together a variety of natural attractions all around town. Its coasts hold comfortable hotels and houses where tourists can stay and enjoy the beauty of this magical place.
