A Day Trip for the Brave and for People Who Love Cold Weather
Translated by: Shelly Freund
“Los Planes de Renderos” is one of the favorite places to visit for both locals and tourists, for it has one of the most remarkable vistas of the entire city of San Salvador, not to mention the local and very famous pupusas and cold climate!
Fun and appropriate for all ages, this day-trip is delightful. During this relaxed trip you can enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the capital city, buy some hand-made crafts made by local artisans and taste the delicious pupusas with pickled cabbage, tomato sauce, and any drink you desire.
For the adrenaline “junkies” there is a more daring spot called “La Puerta del Diablo” (The Devil´s Door), located approximately 6 kilometers away from the Balboa Park (Parque Balboa). Here, you can find “fun” at the staggering height of 1,250 meters ABOVE sea level, which is why it is considered the highest point in San Salvador.
This site was formed during the San Dionisio storm in the year 1700 when the rock formation was cut into three by the wind.
From up here you can see La Paz’s Pacific Ocean shore, Lake Ilopango, the charming Panchimalco village, the majestic San Vicente volcano, officially named Chinchontepeque, among other natural monuments and landmarks.
Mystery lingers in the air and, as some say, the name given to this site comes from a long ago tale. It is said that an unfriendly and rather disrespectful man once courted Mr. Renderos’ (former owners of this land) only daughter. It is said that he had always despised the Renderos.
To get her love and attention, this young man made a pact with the devil and after the spell was cast, a mighty lightning bolt broke the land in three.
Balboa Park is another must-see place. It lies on 40 acres of land and it is the first tourist center that ever existed in El Salvador. It opened in 1949. It is an ecological reservoir boasting nature trails which allow visitors to breathe fresh air and practice sports.
But if what you seek is to spend some family time you can visit the Family Park (El Parque de la Familia), which offers green expanses, children’s rides, sport courts, skating rings, motocross, gift shops, and more.
Don´t let the chilly weather keep you from having fun! Visit Los Planes de Renderos, where you will find the perfect combination for enjoyment and fun without stress.
